The ECi is a team competition in which students at all levels - undergraduates
and Master's and Ph.D. candidates - present a solution to an environmental challenge
based on the experiences of our members. In responding to the challenge,
entrants must consider regulatory approaches, political and community issues, and
technical and scientific solutions. The ECi showcases students' abilities
while enhancing their professional experience - allowing them to catch the eye of some
of the most influential leaders in the industry. In addition to developing
professional contacts and potential mentors, student teams are eligible to win cash prizes.

The goal of the NTX Environmental Education Committee is to develop
and mentor student chapters at universities and community colleges,
administer scholarships, promote environmental education and networking
between students and environmental professionals. Through
the development and mentoring of student chapters the education committee
seeks to provide opportunities for student research, internships and job
networking. The education committee administers scholarships
through an application process. The committee promotes job
networking by providing an avenue for students to post resumes, network
with employers and learn about job opportunities. The committee
promotes environmental education by participating in Earthday, Science
Fairs and Special Programs. The committee's current focus is
to develop new student chapters in North Texas.

The Education Committee is embarking on our campaign to form Air &
Waste Management Association (A&WMA) student chapters and are looking
for industry/regulator/college faculty members volunteers. The
committee had an initial meeting on May 7, 2010
(meeting minutes, 23 KB pdf file)
from which several ideas for student chapter involvement with NTX A&WMA
evolved. Those ideas have been put into practice including
driving students to selected chapter meetings and completion of our
first mini-research project. The UTA student Chapter was
awarded a mini research project from Risk Management and Engineering
Ltd. (RME) to help identify the quantity of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide
emissions that could occur from a spill of ammonium polysulfide.
The
project background and request (7.8 MB pdf file) from David Weeks of RME and Ms. Roja
Haritha Gangupomu's (UTA Student)
report (0.6 MB pdf file) are provided.
Action Plan:
- Appoint NTX AWMA Chapter school liaisons.
- Liaisons find faculty advisor.
- Liaisons work with faculty advisor to charter student chapter.
- Liaisons work with student chapter to ensure chapter remains viable after 1st year.
Specific functions of the faculty advisor and chapter liaisons are provided
in the
DRAFT Student Chapter Development training program (34 KB Powerpoint file).

The North Texas Chapter has participated in the local
Regional Science Fairs for many years. We send a
delegation of volunteer judges to review the Junior and Senior
level environmental projects. From these we select
a winner from each level to receive a cash gift and a certificate.
Thats the simple mechanics of the day.
The real action is seeing these young adults stand up to explain
and defend their projects. Its always interesting and
entertaining to watch their minds spin into action and try to put
into words their ideas and findings.
This year we will have judges at both the Fort Worth and the Dallas
Regional Science & Engineering Fairs. They are both held
the last week end in February. Fort Worths fair will be
at the Will Rogers Memorial Center with judging either on the 28th
or the 1st. Dallass is in Fair Park on the 27th.
We already have a small group put together to judge the fairs,
however there is always room for more!
If interested, please contact Larry Hale, 214-623-1586.
